VISION FORUM SPRING MEETING 2012 - March 14-16, 2012.

Vision Forum is proud to announce its fourth international workshop with KSM and Östsam in Norrköping and Skärblacka March 14-16, 2012. It is a packed program with participants from all over the world that will meet local players for inspiration and creation.

This year’s meeting focuses the public and private a theme that KSM has worked on with its MA students over the last year. Can one make a distinction between and private and public in the age of digital and social media? Where does art and poiesis fit in a public private dichotomy? Can we talk about centre an a periphery in a round and quickly shrinking world? This are some of the questions that we will dwell upon together.

We are very happy to develop the established collaborations in Norrköping and pleased to travel to Skärblacka to meet new institutions and local enthusiasts.

For this new OuUnPo session no topic has been defined. But we might keep in mind vague notions such as: path, ceremony, decadence, heteronomy, ... We decided to leave more time to the group itself and focus will be made on OuUnPo members interventions. Of course this also includes nice meals and partying.

The program is shaped as an imaginary book and each chapter is freely referring to a quote of Fernando Pessoa. The content of each chapter is kept secret until the first day’s Prologue. You are asked to bring a bathing costume and a total black outfit.

ANASTASIA AX – PAPER ISLAND

Verkstad is very happy to present its first exhibition 2012 with the artist Anastasia Ax.

Anastasia Ax incorporates different mediums in her practice such as drawings, sculpture, video and performance. PAPER ISLAND is a gigantic pompeijiesque sculpture made of recycled paper and plaster. The work has been specifically conceived for Verkstad in Norrköping.

Anstasia Ax has created an installtion which has been made not only to consider, but also to hear and to climb by using. PAPER ISLAND is a gigantic white object made of white compressed paper, gypsum?, clothes and books. An island of human traces? An iceberg turned into a fossil? Traces after a catastrophe? A cocoon of memories? A lump of civilization? A sculpture to destroy and to relate to in an unsentimental way? A sculpture to dissect?

PAPER ISLAND is an independent sequel to EXILE that was staged at the music festival ‘Way Out West’ in summer of 2011. Here the audience was invited to participate in the installation. Accompanied by heavy techno music, the sculpture developed into a dance floor. At Verkstad the audience is also invited to participate, but this time by mounting the PAPER ISLAND and feeding the dormant mountaineer inside of ourselves.

Anastasia Ax was born in 1979, lives and works n Stockholm.

Vision Forum congratulates Leonora Hamill to winning the HSBC photography prize 2012. The first images in the prize-winning series 'Art in Progress' were carried out during a Vision Forum workshop in Guangzhou in 2008 and Leo has been developing the series ever since.

221A Artist Run Centre is seeking project proposals from curators commencing late 2012. 221A has implemented the curatorial residencies program to encourage a diversity of curatorial approaches to this nascent interdisciplinary field. Emerging and professional curators and curatorial collectives are encouraged to submit which may include recent graduates and practicing artists, designers and architects. Projects may include exhibitions, performances, publications, talks or workshops. Proposals should discuss a viewpoint, theory, or approach that the project hopes to foster as well as include its relation to the organizations mandate.

Travessias at Maré favela in Rio de Janeiro.

Travessias is an exhibition curated by DANIELA LABRA, FREDERICO COELHO and LUISA DUARTE which takes on the virtually impossible task of making in one of Rio's largest favellas.

The exhibition includes work by artist group AVAF, who invite the local population to get free detergent in exchange for empty bottles and Marcos Chaves who plays with the name of the favela and the words complexo (complex) and simples (simple) to inspire respect among the residents. Henrique Oliveira manages the magic act of making a formalist sculpture in the favela and which works beautifully. More images here and more info here.

Inhotim Contemporary Art and Botanical garden.

Inhotim is an amazing art experience. You can drive north from Sao Paulo or Rio. The latter is extremely beautiful. But the roads are not great when you get close to Belo Horizonte, so rent a decent car. At Inhotim they have an extraordinary collection, magnificent garden and the architecture is breathtaking. One of the most remarkable aspects of the collection is the that they have created a special building for the 5 Cosmococa installations by Hélio Oiticica and Neville D’Almeida. In one you can go for a swim a pool while you listen to a piece by John Cage.

Part of our ongoing series of Figures, exploring how knowledge can be co-produced and shared, Fig.4: Time Capsules and Conditions of Now is an artistic research project initiated by curator and art critic Fatos Üstek and supported by Vision Forum, Linköpings Universitet, Sweden. The project investigates the notion of encounter through the introduction of a variety of conditions where the reception and recollection of the 'present moment' diverges.

The research team is made up of artists, curators and writers who have together embarked upon heterogeneous explorations of the conditions of now in the continuously shifting constellation of time-presence-gravity. Lisa Skuret, Vanda Playford, Kaz, Ole Hagen, Soledad Garcia and Jean Matthee, have undertaken experimentation at sites of historical figures such as Sir John Soane, T.S. Eliot, E. Swedenborg and S. Freud along with first-person experiences of shamanic journeying with Zoe Bran, gardening with quantum physicist Julian Barbour and meditating at 10-day vipassana silence retreat.

For this phase of the project the artists and curators in shifting from an engagement within the group, have used their research and experiences to create objects of reflection and interaction for an audience. The project simultaneously takes the form of a publication and an exhibition and is the outcome of several group actions, but the physical manifestation in the space is also a zone where time speeds up or slows down to reveal the multi-dimensional yet immanently insubstantial omnipresence of the eternal now. The project playfully activates a flux of encounters and transformational objects while the artworks take on eclectic forms: a sound, a letter, a photograph, a diagram, a scent, a journey, a lecture and a book.

In Congonhas (Congonhas do Campo) which is a historical city located in Minas Gerais you find an amazing church and sculptures by the mysterious character Aleijadinho (b. Antônio Francisco Lisboa; 1730 or 1738 – 1814). The church is literally situated at the top of the town, so it is not for the faint of heart to drive there. The gallery’s location is designed to underscore the community value of The Essex Street Market by provoking interaction and debate between the multi-cultural local community and the artwork presented. We are particularly interested in exhibits which might relate in some way to the Essex Street Market or the Lower East Side.

ON-CURATING.ORG Issue 12: Reinterpreting collections

Nowadays we can observe clear changes in relation to working with collections. One change is the comeback of the collection as the basis of the exhibition programme. At the same time, this implies a factor of site-specificity and reflects the origin of the museum. However, even if the collection is creatively varied, the core audience still prefers event exhibitions, since it has been trained to look for well-known names. By trusting in familiar names, visitors perhaps hope not to be disappointed.

What is the significance of the collection nowadays, and how can audience interest be won? The insight into some successful and some criticized projects, each irradiating the theme from another perspective, enables us to make up our mind about concepts for curatorial work on collections. In this issue of On-Curating.org, our aim was to find out what possibilities there are for drawing new attention to the collection from visitors, artists, and curators: not only to its highlights, but to the collection as a whole, and to its history. This issue also explores which contexts can trigger new interpretations of old works, and methods of affecting museum structures from the outside so that they are less likely to fossilize.

Landfill Quarterly

Vision Forum member Matthew Rana appears in the latest issue of the beautiful publication Landfill Quarterly. It is a project that chronicles, studies, and redistributes the material byproducts produced by ephemeral artworks. It creates a second venue for projects that largely existed in non-material form, and aims to build a non-linear, cumulative history of social engagement in art. The Quarterly is distributed to subscribers four times a year, so make sure subscribe here. It contains the Journal and selected pieces of material ephemera. As part of the Landfill Archive, supplemental materials become conduits for ideas that continue to circulate. William Stafford has taken some really nice pictures of it at the lab. The publication is initiated by Elyse Mallouk with Ted Purves .

Community without Propinquity* is a Vision Forum project exploring the role of contemporary art and understandings of community in New Towns across the globe. It includes an exhibition with work from Paulo Catrica, Nathan Coley, Jesal Kapadia, Wayne Lloyd, Vincent Meessen, Ishmael Randall Weeks, Pia Rönicke, Stuart Whipps, Bai Xiaoci and video programme including Amanda Beech, Cyprien Gaillard, Dominique Gonzalez Foerster, Pierre Huyghe, Minouk Lim, Corey McCorkle, Vincent Meessen, Pia Rönicke and Huang Xiaopeng.

For October and November, the The Project Space at has been an active Research Laboratory and forum for public events and new artist commissions. The focus of the research has been on the meaning of "community" in New Towns. The closing event will frame this work and research within a panel discussion, the launch of a publication published by ANDPublic and And Endless Supply and the first chance to see new work by the six commissioned artists including Caroline Devine, Patrick Staff, Emma Smith, Kelly Large and Mark Aerial Waller.

David Lock CBE has been an urban planner in MK since 1977, is a founder member of the MK Urban Studies Centre and, in 1987, became President of Milton Keynes City Discovery Centre.

Anthony Iles is a cultural engineer and writer researching and making experiments in the disappearing public sphere. He is Assistant Editor of Mute magazine.

Roman Vasseur is an artist and curator. In 2008 he was appointed ‘Lead Artist’ to Harlow, a post-war New Town in Essex, in the build up to the town’s second phase of regeneration.

Carry Gorney introduced by Mark Aerial Waller, followed by a screening of her work at MK Channel 40, Sweet Sixteen and Things that mother never told us.

Carry Gorney is a Systemic Psychotherapist and writer. She has worked with Inter-Action in London and Milton Keynes, developing the use of video for community participation. This became the basis for a series of television programmes broadcast on MK Channel 40 from 1977 to 1979. Mark Aerial Waller is an artist and has been commissioned to make a new work for the Research Lab, to be presented at the event.

Patrick Staff, Performance, Growth, Forecasts (2011)

A video and performance work by artist Patrick Staff with Milton Keynes' Madcap Performers. The work has developed out of a period of research at the archive of the Milton Keynes Discovery Centre, involving a number of interviews with key planners and academic researchers and participatory workshops. The project explores urban design, growth developments, the history of the garden city and New Town movements with a particular focus on the role of the irrational, mystic and holistic in these plans and cities and how such knowledge is produced, circulated and understood by a community.

London’s Cartel Gallery will host the fourth sequel of The Quantum Police, an ongoing investigation by the artist Per Hüttner and curator Anne Klontz. The Quantum Police exist as an international movement but at the same time their presence in society is shrouded in mystery. Perplexing details of their involvement surface in certain conspiracy theories and their activities have been assumed and never confirmed. In many situations the Quantum Police disguise themselves as the local authority, thus making it more difficult to ascertain which side of the law they stand.

For London’s Cartel Gallery, site specific installations will be created by Hüttner to include sound, sculpture, images and texts. The artist creates works that present the audience with segments of collected Quantum Police evidence, whether in the form of a recorded interview or the forgotten paraphernalia of an undercover crime scene found at The Old Police Station. The works never reveal concise answers to the mystery of the Quantum Police; instead they introduce narratives which highlight the diverse perspectives of the movement.

The exhibition series, The Quantum Police utilizes one concrete piece of evidence which suggests where and when the movement began—The Quantum Law Manifesto, written by two American law students Johnny Ross and Willie Hansen in the late 1960s. From this foundation, numerous sources have been contacted for the project, many of whom play an integral role inspiring the events and works displayed during each exhibition chapter. A live performance inspired by the ambiguity which surrounds the Quantum Police will take place during the opening by Günter Wallraff and Günter Wallraff.

Previously, The Quantum Police has been staged in Stockholm, Sweden (DKTUS); Wuhan, China (Manufactura’s Studio) and Brussels, Belgium (Lambert Gallery). During the opening event in London, a catalogue documenting these international events will be available for purchase.

Verkstadskväll : Podalida

Verkstad kommer att bjuda på späckad kväll med en konstnärlig livespeling av Wolfgang Peter Menzel och filmvisning av Eric M Nilsson kring myten Podalida.

Podalida är en ö som aldrig existerat.
Denna ö i Atlanten mellan Europa och Nordamerika upptäcktes av två venetianska bröder, Nicolo och Antonio Zeno på 1300-talet under sina resor till de norra delarna av Europa. Bröderna var upptäcktsresande och gjorde den såkallade zeno-kartan, där Podalida för första gången var utritad som en ö. Zeno-kartan kom att ligga till grund för andra kartor flera årtionden fram över trots dess inkorrekta beskrivningar.

Wolfgang Peter Menzel är konstnär och bor i Linköping.
Under våren 1945, dog hans far i en ubåt i Nordatlanten, måltavla för en allierad torped, kanske nära Podalidas kust. I hans konstnärskap rekonstruerar han den imaginära identiteten av Podalida. Du 17 septembre au 19 novembre 2011, la Galerie consacre à Meris Angioletti sa première exposition personnelle en France.

Puisant ses recherches tant dans l'histoire des arts des premières abstractions de la fin du XIXème siècle jusqu'aux formes du « cinéma élargi » des années 1970 que dans les sciences cognitives, la psychologie ou les croyances ésotériques, les œuvres de Meris Angioletti interrogent les mécanismes de la perception, de la mémoire et de la psyché. Ouunpo is a three days symposium that will take place in various locations across and around the city of Athens through conventional and non-conventional investigations. The symposium, dedicated to the “oral tradition”, will include performance, round-table discussions, lectures, screenings, visits and walks to various selected sites.

Greece is a country where myths, art, epic and lyrical songs originated from oral tradition and kept alive by travelling poets. This country is also in the limelight due to the current political and economical crisis.

Our visit will be an occasion to investigate the tradition of storytelling and myth as a form of sharing knowledge and performing history, which often stand in opposition to the methodology of institutions. We will try to re-evoke the oral memory of events in contemporary (art) world, with a specific approach to the rituality and the improvisation that are always connected to oral narratives. Performance and initiation to a secret knowledge will be also the objects of our conversations with members of the esoteric milieu and of the masonic lodge.

Inspired by the great religious, theatrical, democratic and artistic traditions of Greece, and in dialogue with local artists, musicians, composers, art historians and curators, we will observe the present moment, and reflect about how a genuine revolutionary movement needs to brake with literal repetition of the past. To perform something means to interpret it, to betray it, to distort it. Boris Groys affirms that “the opposition between living spirit and dead letter informs the whole traditional Western discourse on religion”, but also on art itself, as embodiment of the creative spirit of change.

A symposium proposed by Vanessa Theodoropoulou in collaboration with Nadja Argyropoulou and organised by Alessandra Sandrolini.

Bie Erenurm is starting up an Art Room in Kalamaja Tallinn and is looking for people/galleries/networks to cooperate with. So far they have had two poetry readings in the beginning of the summer. The first one two swedish poets and one of them is also is an artist - Katarina Norling and she brought her exhibition with. The second one was with Andy Willoughby and Kalle Niinikangas (finnish-english).

Community without Propinquity in Milton Keynes

Community without Propinquity is a project exploring the roles of contemporary art and communities in New Towns across the globe. The project includes an exhibition, a video programme, six new artist’s commissions, a research laboratory, publication and symposium.
The exhibition, in the Project Space, includes work related to Shenzhen (China), Chandigarh (India), Brasilia (Brazil) and UK New Towns, such as Harlow, Thamesmead, Runcorn and Stevenage, providing a context for cities built on land with no previous significant population.
The video programme, in the Events Room, explores the utopian social and architectural plans of New Towns, from Chinese replicas of a British seaside town to a German modernist estate, via a new city that exists entirely online.

The Project Space also serves as a research laboratory and forum for public events and artists commissioned to make new work, exploring the social and cultural policies of early Milton Keynes with organisations such as The Open University, MK’s Channel 40 TV station from the 1970s and the communal housing communities. This evolving project will culminate in a final weekend of events, a public symposium where research is presented and a publication.

The project is organised by independent curator Claire Louise Staunton with curatorial group Inheritance Projects, while the research lab and publication have been commissioned from An Endless Supply.

Artists in the exhibition include:
Paulo Catrica, Nathan Coley, Cao Fei, Jesal Kapadia, Wayne Lloyd, Vincent Meessen, Paul Noble, Ishmael Randall Weeks, Pia Rönicke and Stuart Whipps.

Platform announces an open call for an artist residency in Vaasa, Finland. 2-3 international and 2-3 Baltic or Nordic artists will be accepted for the period starting February 2012 till the end of February 2013.

RESPONSE – RESPONSIBILITY
The root of the word responsibility is response, the first known use of the word meant ‘answerable’ to another for something. The word is a social one, based on a question or call. If we are not in dialogue, if there is no discussion or dialogue between us, if we are not demanding and demanded of, the concept of responsibility falls away.
We are in a time of increasing instability -- social, political, economic, environmental -- these instabilities do not stop neatly at the boundaries between individuals, families, cities or countries. They point to our interconnectedness, our interdependence. In the face of these instabilities, some of which may bring catastrophic changes, what, if anything, is being asked of us; what are we asking of others? Can we ask/demand something of others we wouldn’t be prepared to ask of ourselves? What are the ramifications of doing this?
The word responsibility often carries the implication of guilt, culpability or an onerous chore one would like to avoid. Can we recast this word, that links us to each other, in a more positive, social, desiring and pleasurable way?
Artists typically place themselves in the position of outsider, commentator or instigator. Can artists enter into this dialogue at the same level as others, as opposed to the safer/more strategic positions of outsider, commentator or educator?
The above questions, calling for a response, are linguistically driven, the projects need not be. This open call can be seen as an invitation, a possibility or a challenge.

THE PROGRAM
Annually 5-6 artists are invited, normally about 2 months, to realize a project. The residency offers accommodation, a studio, covered travel expenses, a monthly grant as well as a production budget.

To round up the summer and start the new season Lewisham Arthouse presents, Attempts to Get Inside the World, an exciting series of events initiated with the support of Vision Forum and the Arthouse’s Graduate scheme. Over the course of these two weeks a range of talks, screenings and performances will take place set within a laboratory-style exhibition. The intention is to reveal the raw edges to many of the processes that feed an art practice, shifting eyes away from the product and into the thick the background. Particular attention will be given to research transgressing the boundaries of the studio – either through grappling with unknown subjects and disciplines, or through direct attempts to thrust oneself into the midst of an often extreme set of physical and psychological circumstances.

The exhibition space will house two main conference events, Retreat: in the City – 27th and 28th August, organised by Michael Whitby, and Navigating Extremes - 3rd and 4th September by Natasha Rosling. Artists, curators, architects, choreographers, and theatre practitioners from across Europe and London will come together to present talks, set-up discussions, screenings and performances under the umbrella of Attempts to Get Inside the World. A series of furnitures and rolling projections will occupy the gallery space - displaying works, artefacts, test pieces, experiments and research material selected by each participant in reference to the practices discussed.

Alberto Giacometti famously claimed that he wanted to capture the dying and decomposing bodies of the people that he portrayed. The claim is amazingly beautiful because it shifts the outlook on how we perceive time, reality and depiction. The statement obviously turns portraiture upside down, but so much more than that. Just imagine if we could create photographs in the same way. It would make Dorian Gray’s portrait mundane. After all, the body is a short-lived entity that spites the universe’s movement towards higher equilibrium (the second law of thermodynamics). The ageing process on the other hand proves the impotence of this spitefulness.

Community without Propinquity - Milton Keynes

Community without Propinquity is a lab residency, praxis-as-practice, taking place at the Milton Keynes Gallery in October and November 2011.

It is part of an on-going investigation into art and populations of New Towns around the world, initiated by curator Claire Louise Staunton and Inheritance Projects. During the 2 months, the team of researchers, curators, artists and writers will build an archive of artwork made of New Towns, install an accumulative exhibition, edit and design a publicly available publication, commission 4 new artists works and plan a public symposium.

Here you will find information about how to get reimbursed for project expenses and how to organize your receipts. Your expenditures will be reimbursed after you have used up your entire budget for the term and all necessary information has been received (we only do one payment per term).

Step 1—Receipts:

1. Tape all receipts on A4-sheets and number them.

2. Make two photocopied sets of these sheet(s).
· Keep one set for your own reference and mail one set to Per along with the original receipts. 

3. Make an Excel spreadsheet where you sum up all your costs and convert to Swedish kronor. You can make conversions on here .

· A template that you can use is here: example.xls
· Make sure that the numbers on the receipts from the A4 sheets correspond to the numbers on your list!
· Make two copies of this spreadsheet and mail to Per.

Step 2—Reimbursement:
4. On a separate sheet, include the following information:
· Your name and date of birth/personnummer if you are Swedish
· Your bank's BIC or SWIFT address
· Your bank account's IBAN number  (If you have a Swedish bank account it suffices to send the account number and the name of the bank. No need for BIC and IBAN.)
· Make two copies of this paper and mail to Per.

 5. E-mail your BIC and IBAN to Per: (pah (at) swipnet.se). This ensures that the numbers are correct. If you have a Swedish account it suffices to send the account number and the name of the bank.

Please note:
 You will be reimbursed for costs related to travel (tickets, accommodation, etc.) and material costs. If you buy inventory (e.g. computer hardware, camera equipment, etc.) this will belong to LiU and will have to be returned when you finish the course.  Costs for food, web-hotels and domain names will only be reimbursed in special cases. If this is a major part of your project talk to Per.

Step 3—Check list:

All necessary documents that need to be posted to Per should include the following:

Vision Forum is a development of the organisation Curatorial Mutiny and its dialogue with KSM at Linköpings universitet that started in 2004. Since its inception in 2008, Vision Forum has grown to focus on research in contemporary visual art and the integration of education and research on a regional, national and international scale.

The collaboration between KSM and Vision Forum allows knowledge, experience and vision to meet with artistic and academic creativity to enrich the academic and cultural life of the region of Östergötland. The collaboration brings together students, researchers, producers and influential personalities from the arts, humanities and sciences to dialogue about central life issues. The participants of the project come from all over Europe, often with roots from other continents, and also host a broad age range and a balanced gender mix. The exchange safeguards academic and cultural diversity in the region and inspires students, researchers and staff to find, enrich and develop their creative and academic processes.

The collaboration operates on three levels:

 I. Local: To bring knowledge, experience and inspiration and new ideas from all over Europe and further afield to dialogue with and to enrich the unique context of the cultural, institutional and academic world of Norrköping, Linköping and the region of Östergötland.  

II. National: To bring knowledge, experience and inspiration and new ideas from all over Europe and further afield to dialogue with and to enrich the cultural and academic worlds in Sweden. To enforce a dialogue with the academic, institutional and cultural world in the rest of Sweden with Norrköping, Linköping and the region of Östergötland.  

III. International: To create a platform for international expansion for the academic, institutional and artistic world of Norrköping, Linköping and the region of Östergötland and to use this expansion to enrich the professional processes for academics and cultural practitioners in the region.  

To work on these three levels allow the students and researchers to develop their personal practice based on their individual needs, visions and ambitions. But it also allows them to create a platform where they can actively choose to work locally, nationally and internationally. The platform gives them the tools, the network and skills to expand and through that allow the cultural and academic life in the region to expand with them.

The collaboration between KSM and Vision Forum is built on research about the role and nature of knowledge within in the academic and artistic fields. This foundation allows the students and researchers both to operate professionally in local, national and international art audiences and at the same time develop research that benefits the academic and artistic worlds.

The collaboration needs to be based on a clear understanding of the methodologies, goals and limitations of the respective fields: art, science and humanities. It is essential not only to demarcate the nature of knowledge in respective fields and the overlapping aims between them, but also to respect that there are profound philosophical differences between the genres. But both Vision Forum and KSM also both have far reaching experience of what can be achieved through a dialogue between different disciplines.

In each project carried out by students and researchers, great detail is given on the formulation of the problem as well as the context where the problem is addressed. The projects are created and carried out in such a way that they allow the audience to actively follow the outcome through traces of the process undergone. The project is set up with the goal of realizing the potential of each individual student and researcher and to stimulate a rich cultural and academic environment in Östergötland.

3. Thematic Fields 

  "In every place where, in some way, a truth is pronounced on existence, it is founded on a singularity. Averages, statistics, sociology, history, demography, or polls are not capable of teaching us what the history of truth is. Philosophy is thus required by the world to be a philosophy of singularity, to be capable of pronouncing and thinking the singular"

The collaboration between KSM and Vision Forum focuses on three main fields. These have been developed over the last years. Within each field the students and researchers work with meetings, research and production preferably in parallel. The three fields also open doors for work across the fields and students and researchers often work with projects that either is placed between these thematic fields and/or between accepted artistic genres.

The three thematic fields are: 

I.  Performance: Vision Forum has focused on performance from the outset. The practical approach to academic research that has been a trademark of KSM from the start makes it very easy to collaborate in this field and the two organizations have been working together in this genre since 2004.
II. Art and Science : The collaboration offers artistic production and research to meet scientific and humanist research.
III. Experimental film: Film is and has always been a strong point for KSM, but the creators have had a hard time reaching outside the local. Vision Forum offers the venues for presentation and expansion. This field also works for an expanded local production of experimental film.

 4. History and Evaluation of the Collaboration to Date

The collaboration between KSM and Vision Forum has an long track record. KSM remains the main sponsor of the project, but Vision Forum has in the last years received more and more external funding and supporters include Moderna Museets International Program, Ragnar Söderbergs Stiftelse and Statens Kulturråd in Stockholm, the Nordic Council of Ministers and The Nordic Cultural fund in Copenhagen, The Swedish Institute in Stockholm and Paris, the French embassies and consulates in London, Melbourne, Los Angeles and Stockholm; The Swedish embassies in Ottawa, Warsaw, Madrid, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing and London.

Vision Forum and KSM have together recently worked with European institutions like Tate Britain and Tate Modern, London; MACRO, Rome, Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and Palais de Tokyo, Paris and with leading academic institutions like Karolinska institutet in Stockholm, Donders Institute in Nijmegen, The Max Planck institute in Göttingen and Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

Performance practice

Vision looks at performance in a very open way and also investigates the porousness between exhibition and performance through projects like Ö- A Möbius Trip. Or by initiating meetings where boundaries between creator and audience is blurred. This is the case in Ouunpo meetings. Vision Forum is also looking for performative aspects in situations like lectures and sometimes creates workshop-like situations where new forms of meeting between researcher and audience is created.

This research has been developed in close collaboration with KSM and there search for alternative ways of documenting and presenting academic research. For more examples about these cross-over look at the information about meetings/seminars and exhibitions/performances.

Vision Forum Film

Vision Forum Film is Vision Forum's youngest research field. It has been started with the specific situation in Östergötland and Norrköping in mind and to develop its relationship to the capital region of Stockholm. Within KSM in Norrköping there is great talent fostered each year. But there is little support or possibility to grow in the region. We have therefore set up this research to stimulate film making in the region and to develop dialogue with the capital region and the international network in Vision Forum.

We are specifically interested in genre cross-overs, fostering production that allows film and visual art to meet. Vision Forum has previously been particularly successful in creating meetings between visual art and music, visual art and science and visual art and drama and builds on these experiences and contacts.

Vision Forum has from the outset worked with researchers in the hard sciences to investigate how meetings between specialists in the two fields can inspire creativity on both sides. During one of the (In)visible Dialogue sessions organised by Vision Forum in 2011, Sandra Masur (Mount Sinai, New York) and Laurent Devèze (ISBA, Besançon) underlined how the scientific laboratory has gradually grown more into a communal working place for research and development over the last decade. The practice has shifted to larger research teams where the responsibilities are divided and tasks differentiated, but still retaining a common goal. On the other hand, the artist has retained his/her singular brand name and a more insular process. We have seen movements where artists form groups (Superflex, General Idea), but also artists like Olafur Eliasson and Tomàs Saraceno develop studios that emulate the working methods of architectural firms. But we our preparatory research suggests that by implicating methodologies from the sciences that this can develop further.

Vision Forum sees great potential developing parallel strategies to institutions like the Santa Fe Institute that look at large populations in major cities or the interactions in schools of fish. Here the extended specialization and at the same time demand for amassing and evaluating gigantic amounts of data has forced researchers to collaborate with researchers in the humanities and design. Vision Forum has developed both a practice and the theoretical and digital tools to create situations for true artistic research and production based on the above mentioned working methods.

Research in Contemporary Visual Art

It is getting increasingly difficult to define the boundaries of science, art or philosophy. Mostly, because each of these fields are expanding quickly and amassing a richness and variety of knowledge at high speed. Massive amounts of information is produced in each field every day.

But because of the increased complexity and specialization (along with the tightened demand on results), the dialogues between the disciplines have become increasingly important. Vision Forum's research indicates that when interdisciplinary meetings are staged in an inspiring way, they become priceless sources of creativity for the people involved. The importance of what we can contribute with does not lie in art, science or philosophy - but between the three.

One of the ground rules for the research carried out in Vision Forum lies in departing from the classical idea of communication where a single speaker utters a clearly defined idea that is transferred to an individual or group. We replace information transmission with mutual inspiration and that are inscribed into in numerous interconnected networks. We also need to break down knowledge into three separate subgroups: information, experience and vision. Information corresponds to traditional models of knowledge and communication. Experience refers to to how our life experiences become a form of knowledge and is often corporeal: an old fisherman can with great exactitude gauge the change of weather by looking at the sky. But move him across the globe and that experience will probably prove far less exact. Vision refers to conceptual thinking and explains how young people can come up with groundbreaking ideas even though they have less knowledge and experience than their older peers.

The methodology builds on Deleuzian ideas about reversing Platonism and has been developed in Vision Forum’s networks, particularly in the OuUnPo node. This idea of communication is based on ‘inspirationalism’ rather than knowledge distribution. It means that members with eclectic backgrounds who are successful in their respective practice, meet at regular intervals at different places. These meetings are meant for the members to inspire each other, provoke each others curiosity and to dialogue with the local artistic and scientific network. Most meetings involve production. But that is not a prerequisite for participation.

The Vision Forum inspirationalism is based on the age-old pedagogy that when a person discovers something out of his/her curiosity that experience is so much more valuable than a top-down distribution of information. The shared experience is also very important for creating a productive dynamic within the ‘group’. The word is written within quotation mark, since the formation of the group is not there to create a communal identity. It is rather a loosely held together group of individuals who benefit from mutual inspiration by sharing visions, experiences and information and where the boundaries of the group remain open.

Here we arrive at one of the fundamental distinctions of the research. It builds on the idea that art functions different from technology and science. It is individual and is built on the uniqueness of the experience that each visitor experience when he/she interacts with the artwork. This rational is very different from when we deal with medical drugs, plumbing or digital technology. With these, it is essential that all three to function identically each time. We want the toilet to flush, the computer to boot and the drug to kill the correct germs.

All of us know that art works differently. We have all been indifferent to great a master’s work that we have seen hundreds of times and then with a bang, we get a great metaphysical experience in front of an artwork. But with certain art work or certain artists, this profound effect will never materialise no matter how much one appreciates the work’s quality and how many times you experience it.

In Vision Forum we have seen the importance that each participant formulates their own definition how art, philosophy and science operates. The discussions around definitions of the disciplines remain some of the most exciting and also conflictual in all forms of cross-disciplinary exchanges.

Vision Forum builds interface with its audience using various media. We organise international meetings in collaboration with Östsam and KSM at Linköpings universitet twice a year. These allow the region of Östergötland to take part of our research. These meetings are collaborations with regional institutions and individuals. We have worked with Norrköpings konstmuseum, Arbetets museum, Länsmuseet and Visualisation Center C.

Vision Forum also arranges international meetings in Europe, China and South America. These are predominantly organised within research groups such as Ouunpo, Speech & What Archive and La Durée and have been carried out in collaboration with art institutions like Tate Britain, in London; MACRO in Rome, Ullens Centre for Contemporary Art in Beijing and academic institutions like Max Planck Institute in Germany and Holland and CCA in San Francisco.

* Vision Forums praktiska erfarenhet av konstproduktion, curation och entreprenörskap.

Vision Forum har sedan 2009 erbjudit tjänster till universitet, forskningsinstitutioner, museer, gallerier och ideella konstorganisationer inom fältet konst, curation med fokus på tvärvetenskapliga och interdisciplinära projekt. Verksamheten har vuxit ur den ideella organisation Förening Curatorial Mutiny som sedan 2001 erbjudit liknande tjänster. Detta ger organisationen god dokumenterad praktisk erfarenhet av konstproduktion, curation och entreprenörskap. Dessutom finns i Vision Forums ledning, lärare och bland gästlärare en mycket gedigen erfarenhet av inom de tre efterfrågade områdena.

Vision Forums personal har en solid konstnärlig kompetens. Våra lärare och gästlärare utgörs av aktiva konstnärer och curatorer inom bildkonstområdet som har väldokumenterad erfarenhet inom konstproduktion, utställningsmakande samt är ofta specialiserade på experimentella, gränsöverskridande och interdisciplinära verksamheter. Vision Forums personal och gästlärare har även publicerat texter i viktiga forum om konst, kultur och närliggande kulturyttringar. Vi har sålunda även en stor kunskap när det gäller konstteori och den filosofiska diskursen som är kopplad till konstnärlig teori och närliggande filosofiska fält.

* Projektledarkompetens i Vision Forum

Vision Forum har startat och drivit ett stort antal internationella projekt och har gedigen erfarenhet och kunskap att arrangera konstnärliga projekt samt att finna extern finansiering som kommer studenterna tillgodo.

Vi driver för närvarande ett dussintaltal större internationella projekt och ett tjugotal mindre lokala och nationella projekt där studenter ingår som en integrerad del. Dessutom arrangerar Vision Forum två seminarier per år i samarbete med KSM och Östsam, vilket kommer många studenter på LiU tillgodo. Vid dessa evenemang samarbetar vi även med lokala institutioner som Norrköpings konstmuseum, Arbetets museum, Verkstad och Visualiseringscenter C, vilket betyder ett viktigt internationellt och kulturellt tillskott och närvaro i regionen.

Vision Forum erbjuder studenterna projekt där de, under lärares översyn, skapar sin egen projektledarkompetens. Denna arbetsmetod bygger på att Vision Forums personal och gästlärare har god projektledarkompetens inom de relevanta fälten. Lärare och gästlärare har sålunda stor erfarenhet att leda stora internationella projekt, leda grupper av konstnärer och studenter, samt att finansiera, markandsföra och dokumentera dessa projekt.

* Vision Forums tillgång till ett internationellt nätverk

Att skapa internationella kontakter är relativt enkelt. Det som är svårt är att underhålla dem. Vision Forum är väl positionerat i internationella nätverk – inom såväl inom konst, forskning och utbildning. Dessa bygger på mångårigt arbete av vår huvudlärare Per Hüttner och våra gästlärare. Studenterna får tillgång till att arbeta med ledande akademiska och konstnärliga institutioner. Men de har även ett ansvar att vårda de kontakter som har etablerats under lång tid. Vision Forums lärare och gästlärare bor och arbetar i Stockholm, Paris, London och Rio de Janeiro och har extensiva internationella nätverk som kommer studenterna till godo.

Vision Forum har genomfört utställningar, föreläsningar, performances och sociala evenemang med Tate Britain och Tate Modern i London; MACRO i Rom; Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris och Palais de Tokyo i Paris; UCCA, Mingshen Museum och Rockbund museum i Kina. Vi har även arbetat med akademiska institutioner som Karolinska institutet i Stockholm, Donders Institute i Nijmegen, Max Planck institut i Göttingen och Mount Sinai School of Medicine i New York. Vision Forum producerar publikationer som dokumenterar verksamheten. Dessa distribueras internationellt vilket betyder att studenternas produktioner blir synliga och aktiveras i dessa nätverk och dokumenteras för framtiden och skapar nya nätverk och utvecklar existerande.

* Handledningskompetens inom Vision Forum

Vision Forum har erbjudit tjänster till olika utbildningsinstitutioner i Sverige, Europa och Asien sedan 2009. Organisation har vuxit ur den ideella organisation Förening Curatorial Mutiny som sedan 2001 erbjudit akademisk handledning och skapat internationella möten och projekt. Dessutom finns både bland Vision Forums ledning, lärare samt bland gästlärare så mycket stor erfarenhet av handledning vid ledande akademiska institutioner i många viktiga europeiska, amerikanska, asiatiska och australiensiska institutioner.

Per Hüttner som är huvudlärare på Vision Forum sitter dessutom i skolstyrelsen för Institut de beaux arts de Besançon i Frankrike och arbetar kontinuerligt med doktorander bl.a. i Stockholm, London och Paris.

*Administrativ kompetens i Vision Forum

Vision Forum har lång erfarenhet att hantera och samordna budget, söka extern finansiering, administrera och redovisa arbete, budget och resultat i enlighet med det regelverk som gäller. Vi har även lång erfarenhet att arbeta med personal och att vara i konstant dialog med dem så att både studenter, lärare och gästlärare växer i sitt arbete.

Vision Forum har fått stöd från en rad regionala, nationella och internationella organisationer. Att arbeta med prestigefyllda institutioner ställer höga krav på att verksamheten genomsyras av transparens och tydlighet.

Vision Forum har även kompetens och erfarenhet att administrera studenternas arbete och förbereda dessa för bedömning och examination av formella kursgivare enligt de rutiner som finns på KSM, LiU och andra institutioner.

Vision Forum ser att en grundläggande förståelse och kompetens om administration är av yttersta vikt för unga kreatörer, vilket betyder att vi överlåter ett visst administrativt ansvar till studenterna och att vi ger dem grundläggande undervisning i administration. Denna arbetsmetod bygger på att det finns en solid administrativ erfarenhet inom organisationen som kan delges studenterna, något som personal och lärare hos oss har.

* Erfarenhet av arbete och undervisning på svenska, engelska och franska inom det konstnärliga området på grund- och påbyggnadsnivå inom Vision Forum.

Det blir allt viktigare för unga kreatörer att läsa, tala och skriva ett andra och tredje språk väl, samt att få erfarenhet av olika internationella kontexter. Vision Forum låter svenska studenter delta i dynamiska multikulturella situationer och låter europeiska studenter komma till Sverige. Det är sålunda viktigt att undervisning i viss mån sker på andra platser och på andra språk.

Vision Forums huvudlärare, Per Hüttner har arbetat vid engelska, amerikanska och kanadensiska konstskolor sedan 1997, svenska konsthögskolor sedan 1998 och vid franska konstskolor sedan 2004 (samtliga på grund och masternivå). Han har dessutom publicerat ett stort antal texter och publikationer på engelska och svenska. Våra gästlärare har väldokumenterad erfarenhet att arbeta på svenska, engelska och franska på olika internationella lärosäten och flera gästlärare har doktorerat i konst och/eller närliggande områden. Våra lärare arbetar och/ eller har arbetat som lärare och gästlärare på viktiga universitet och konsthögskolor i Sverige, Frankrike, England, USA, Australien på grund, påbyggnadsnivå och doktorandnivå. Våra gästlärare är dessutom utbildade på engelskspråkig- och i vissa fall franskspråkig utbildning.

Vision Forum har även ett mycket gott akademiskt nätverk, vilket betyder att vi kan plocka in kompetens från ledande universitet och forskningsinstitutioner i Europa, USA, Asien, Sydamerika eller Australien om så behövs.

* Hur Vision Forum ser på hur konstproduktionens olika roller interagerar.

Den nationella och internationella konstscenen visar kontinuerligt upp en större komplexitet. Dessutom gör dagens politiska och ekonomiska klimat att det även blir svårare att överleva som kulturproducent. Men dessa förutsättningar gör även att det finns en större valfrihet hur en karriär i konst- och kulturvärlden kan formas. Vision Forums förbereder studenter och unga kreatörer för denna komplexa yrkesmässiga situation. Vi driver i dagsläget ett dussintal större internationella projekt och ett femtontal mindre nationella och regionala konstprojekt. Dessa projekt är främst praktiska, men inkorporerar även teoretiska aspekter både i planering och genomförande. Projekten planeras och realiseras i samarbete med museer, gallerier, curatorer, konstkritiker och i vissa fall i samarbete med forskare i humaniora och/eller inom vetenskap.

Vision Forum erbjuder de deltagande studenterna praktiska och reella situationer där beställare, kreatör och curator samarbetar och förhandlar i en situation som ger studenten de erfarenheter som den behöver för att agera i en praktisk och yrkesmässig situation. Projekten ger studenterna möjlighet att växa och utvecklas i den roll de väljer.

Vision Forums regionala, nationella och internationella nätverk betyder även att gästlärare kan bjudas in för kortare eller längre dialoger för att ge studenterna den handledning som krävs för att genomföra sitt projekt. I samband med att gästlärare bjuds in genomför Vision Forum ofta föreläsningar som kommer LiU, dess personal och övriga studenter till gagn.

* Hur Vision Forum ser på rumsligt gestaltande samverkar med den samtida konstpraktiken.

Den ovan nämnda komplexiteten i dagens kulturvärld, ställer höga krav på de nyutexaminerade studenterna och att de förstår hur man arbetar i det konstnärliga rummet oavsett om det är reellt (traditionell utställning), linjärt (t.ex. film och performance) eller digitalt/virtuellt. För att möta denna situation har Vision Forum i samarbete med lärare och ledning på KSM utvecklat en unik arbetsmetod där gränserna mellan traditionell utställning, film, performance och digital presentation interagerar intimt.

Vi erbjuder, inom ramen för projektet, de deltagande studenterna praktiska och reella situationer där beställare, kreatör och curator samarbetar. Detta betyder att studenterna både får praktiskt och teoretisk handledning och träning i rumsgestaltning, utställningsmakande. De får även möjlighet att arbeta med kunniga aktörer från samtidskonstens internationella arenor, så att de ständigt befinner sig i en visionär och framåtblickande verksamhet av hög kvalitet.

Vision Forum driver även forskningsprojekt som bryter ny mark för hur utställningen kan hitta nya former och ny publik. Detta garanterar att studenterna både får möta ledande aktörer inom olika fält och själva utveckla nya vägar för sin egen kreativa aktivitet i dialog med specialister i fältet.

* Hur Vision Forum ser att konstpraktiken samspelar med en global utveckling, det vill säga internationaliseras, och praktiseras gränslöst såväl innehållsmässigt som fysiskt och tekniskt.  

Dagens globaliserade konstarenor är nära länkade till olika digitala tekniker vilket gör att information och idéer sprids med en stor hastighet. En kreatör i Östergötland kan sålunda ha mer gemensamt med en kollega i Jakarta, än sin studentkamrat. Vision Forum konst- och forskningsprojekt är utvalda och/eller skapade i en gränsöverskridande anda där olika genrer och discipliner möts. Projekten inkorporerar även medvetet nya media och nya tekniker för att möjliggöra största möjliga internationella närvaro och dialog. Projekten utgör även en del av komplexa internationella nätverk vilket gör att vi kan erbjuda studenter verktyg att hitta likasinnade även om de befinner sig på andra sidan jorden.

Vision Forums lärare och gästlärare bor och arbetar i Stockholm, Paris, Amsterdam, London och Rio de Janeiro och har extensiva internationella nätverk som kommer studenterna till godo. Vision Forums publikationer, möten, workshops och filmproduktioner skapar möjligheter för studenterna att även möta ledande aktörer inom en mängd kulturella och akademiska fält. Detta ger studenterna möjlighet att utveckla sin verksamhet internationellt.

* Hur ett tvärmedialt perspektiv är en del av Vision Forums arbete.  

Vision Forum arbetar tvärmedialt först genom användande av nya media i undervisning, presentation och kommunikation. Vi integrerar ständigt mer nätbaserad kommunikation och presentationsverktyg i vår verksamhet. Vi arbetar dessutom med teknisk personal som utvecklar både grafiska och digitala verktyg för gränsöverskridande verksamhet. Men vi använder även dessa nya medier för att låta olika genrer och discipliner mötas inom vårt arbete. Detta betyder att bildkonstnärer, musiker, filmare, författare, teaterkreatörer, dansare, arkitekter, designers och andra kreatörer samarbetar i gemensamma projekt.

Genom att Vision Forum arbetar med sina egna filmproduktioner och utvecklar web-sajter med rörlig bild, får studenterna tillgång till ett internationellt nätverk där en mängd media möts och samexisterar. Vi arbetar aktivt för att dessa produktioner i så stor utsträckning som möjligt skall visas inom ramen för utställningar, performances, workshops, festivaler eller webbaserade events eller plattformar snarare än att stanna i en akademisk kontext. Vision Forums extensiva internationella nätverk har gjort att vi varit framgångsrika med att implementera detta under de sista åren. Nya samarbetsavtal och mer extern finansiering gör att Vision Forum kommer att bli ännu bättre positionerat för att utveckla det tvärmedial arbetet inom de närmaste åren, samt att studenterna kommer att kunna få nya plattformer för att visa sina tvärmedial projekt.

Hur Vision Forum delger Reell produktion och deltagande i utställningsverksamheten och dess olika delar för sina medlemmar. 
Vision Forum arbetsmetod fungerar både akademiskt och praktiskt. Vi ser samtliga media som olika former av utställning. Detta arbete utgår från vår huvudlärare, Per Hüttners långa erfarenhet med konstproduktion. Genom denna gedigna kunskap har vi kunnat genomföra projekt med många internationellt framstående akademiska institutioner och konstplattformar. Men vi har även ett gott nätverk lokalt och nationellt, vilket skapar goda möjligheter för studenterna av redovisa sitt arbete såväl lokalt, som nationellt och internationellt.

Vision Forum driver sedan 2011 Vision Forum Film. Detta betyder att vi kan erbjuda studenterna arbete med internationella filmproduktioner. Vi arbetar aktivt för att dessa skall kunna inkorporeras i tvärmediala produktioner där den rörliga bilden, ljud, och performance ingår som en viktig del i arbetet. Vi har under 2012 skapat samarbetsavtal med David Roberts Foundation i London och den fransk-brasilianska organisationen Anahata (och genom dem universitet i Rio de Janeiro) för att stärka vår position inom utställningsmedia, tvärmedial produktion och interdisciplinärt arbete.

Vision Forum är dagsläget bättre positionerade än någonsin för erbjuda studenterna reell produktion och deltagande i utställningsverksamheten och dess olika delar från förberedelse till dokumentation.

Långsiktighet är ett av Vision Forums honnörsord. Vår arbetsmetod ger de studerande utrymme för att utveckla sin konstnärliga verksamhet på ett sådant sätt att de kan växa under en längre tid. Vi erbjuder sålunda en unik kontinuitet där studenterna ständigt växa vidare i organisationen. Denna arbetsmetod har utvecklats speciellt i dialog med KSM, ISAK och Östsam.

Dessutom finns det en stor geografisk och professionell spridning bland de kreatörer som är knutna till Vision Forum. Vi samarbetar med professionella som utför ett mycket avancerat konstnärligt, akademiskt och vetenskapligt arbete. Dessa professionella söker inspiration i nätverket och speciellt bland unga kreatörer för att bibehålla sin visionära kraft. Vi skapar sålunda broar mellan vision och erfarenhet. Denna unika strategi låter studenten bygga egen meritering i dialog med mer erfarna kollegor. Vi strävar att utveckla studentens individualitet, så att han/hon kan dra nytta av denna för att bygga en meningsfull yrkessituation och ett rikt liv.

Våra studenter har hittills lyckats mycket väl med sina konstnärliga och kreativa karriärer. Dessutom är det mycket glädjande att våra studenter som sökt sig till närliggande kulturella näringar tillika nått stora framgångar i andra kreativa och digitala verksamheter. Vi kan även se att de som sökt anställning lyckas väl inom dessa näringar och de som arbetar freelance också generellt varit mycket framgångsrika.

* Hur Vision Forum arbetar på olika inom- och utomeuropeiska konstarenor.

Vision Forum fokuserar främst på samarbete med Europeiska partners. Vi har genomfört projekt från Umeå i norr till Aten i söder och från Kiev i öst till Porto i väster. Men organisationen har även mycket goda kontakter i Asien, Nord och Sydamerika samt i Australien. Detta betyder att vi kan erbjuda studenterna att samarbeta med kreatörer och forskare från i stort sett hela världen. Organisationen har speciell kompetens i samarbete med Kina där vi arbetat med ett stort antal mycket ansedda institutioner som Mingshen Museum, Rockbund Museum, OCAT och UCCA.

Vi arbetar i dagsläget främst på att utveckla samarbete i Brasilien. Men vi förbereder tillika projekt i Japan och söker att utnyttja de förändringar som sker i mellanöstern för att fördjupa en demokratiskapande verksamhet denna region.
